The Mid-Missouri UNA-USA sponsored a Trivia Night fundraiser at the Heidelberg Restaurant to benefit literacy for Masai girls in Kenya. Two members from the Mid-Missouri UNA-USA chapter attended the UNA-USA Council of Chapters and Divisions (CCD) Annual Meeting at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC, June 8-10. | Report on 2008 U.S. Foreign Policy Colloquium |

Sheng Lu, a first-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Textile and Apparel Management, College of Human Environmental Science at the University of Missouri, is from China. Before coming to MU last August, Sheng Lu graduated with his Masters' |

degree from China Textile University in Shanghai, China. He attend the 2008 U.S. Foreign Policy Colloquium held in Washington D.C. in June. The colloquium, hosted by the National Committee on United-States China Relations, helps Chinese graduate students in the U.S. have a better understanding of the different factors influencing U.S. foreign policy. Having just returned from the Colloquium, Sheng Lu would like to share the insights he gained from this unique experience with the MU community. Read the full report by Sheng Lu.

HED Brings US & Brazilian Educators Together |

Founded in 1992 by the six presidential associations of higher education institutes in the United States, the Higher Education For Development (HED) has positively addressed global development challenges worldwide and promoted international activities and cooperation for the higher education community. Collaborating closely with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), HED has already established more than 300 international partnerships in higher education in 60 countries. On June 9th, HED launched a program called the "Brazil-U.S. Partnership to Strengthen Vocational and Technical Education". Please click here to see this news release.

| New Guests from Inner Mongolia, China |

Eighteen government officials from Inner Mongolia, China, arrived
at Mizzou on May 20th to receive three-month leadership training, a program organized by Asian Affairs Center |

| and the Inner Mongolian Government. Prior to arriving in Missouri, these officials, recommended by their upper level leaders, participated in intensive English training at the University of Inner Mongolia. The final selection was based on the scores they received from the English examination. Their work experience covers public administration, executive administration, personnel management, financial management, business management, and quality management. More... |

The sessions focused on US university collaborations with China and Africa, and included three sessions involving MU faculty. Vice Provost Handy Williamson presented an overview of MU’s PIRE Project (Partnership in Research and Education) which studies intraplate earthquakes in China and the New Madrid Fault in Missouri. Dr. Williamson also served as moderator for a session discussing Intellectual Properties (IP) and International Traffic and Arms Regulation (ITAR) and how they affect institutions of learning. He was also one of the chief planners for the conference.
James Scott, Associate Vice Provost, served as moderator for a session on MU’s long relationship with the University of Western Cape, South Africa and with USAID funded technical assistance project in southern Sudan. The session featured three of MU’s projects: The Law School’s exchange program presented by Dean Larry Dessem, the International Center for Indigenous Phytotherapy Studies (TICIPS) presented by William R. Folk, Professor of Biochemistry and the Director of the TIPCS. The third presenter in this session,
Michael F. Nolan, Professor of Agriculture and the director of the Division of Applied Social Sciences gave a presentation on MU’s longstanding project to assist development efforts in Southern Sudan, based administratively in Kenya.
The article, “Universities seek to strengthen ties in Africa and China”, published in the Chronicle of Higher Education, quoted some of these presenters. More...
MU hosted the involvement of three of the conference’s most riveting speakers: Florence Chenoweth of the University of Wisconsin who gave a keynote speech; Alex Kopp from the law firm of Whiteford, Taylor & Preston LLP who spoke on IP and ITAR; and Dr. Anny Wong of the RAND Corporation.
